EDGECUMBE FAREWELL
TROOPS ENTERTAINED
One of many successful farewell functions was lielcl in the new Edgecumbe Hall last Wednesday, a large and representative gathering attending. An enjoyable programme of dances and items brought the function to a close all too soon. Excellent music was supplied byr the Gaiety Boys, items wore con-< tributed by Mrs Patience's pupils, and also" songs by Miss Raymond,, these items Avere enthusiastically re-» ceived. A few appropriate remarks were made by Mr W. A. Hutton prior to the presentation of money belts an<i cash contents to "The local boys on leave. An excellent supper was served; by the ladies of the Farewell Committee. Mr T. Bell ably carried out the duties of M.C. Those farewelled were A. Bell, J.. Clark, G. Moore, A. Rutherford* W. Brown, J. Waddel, J. Perfect and A. W. Iremonger. i EVENING AT MATATA A very successful farewell evening was given to local boys on leave at Matata on Friday evening March 7, the hall being filled to capacity. After supper,- presentations were made to Lieutenant A. Rota ancE Privates L. Hill, V. Moore and F.„ Sykes. Mr F. J. Burt Avas asked to» say a feAv AA r ords and stressed the point lioav tli-at (qualified) Hitler had robbed him of his cherished; Rangitaiki football team, and expressed the .wish that one of the boys AA r ould finish him off whilst over th«(re. Private V. Moore and Lieutenant Rota replied, Lieutenant Rota saying farewell to the pakeha community, and also to his people in their own language. Items were given throughout the evening by Miss A. fiota and Miss S. Te Kiri,. and Miss M. Karepe and Mir R. Hataraka have an exhibition of the "Jitterbug." This was only eclipsed by Miss S. Te Kiri and Mr Tai Burt doing.a hula. This item brought doAvn the house but as gn encore Avas not forthcoming the last dance Avas soon announced, and a very enjoyable evening AA'as brought to a close. SOCIAL EVENING AT OTAKIRI A very pleasant evening was spent in the Otakiri Hair last Wednesday Avhen residents of the district gathered to bid fareAvell to Pte. A. Smith who left on Friday morning for Active Service. The. evening Avas spent in dancing, with items at intervals by Messrs Dunning, Lord and Harris. A novel competition was held and Avon by Miss Pat Forbes. Music was supplied by Messrs Harris and Wood and Mesclames Tlckner and Steenson and Miss E. Hogbin. Supper Avas served by members of the Patriotic Social Committee and many willing helpers, after Avhich, MrW. Murray made a presentation to Mr Smith of a money belt containing notes. All joined in singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow, '* after whicli Mr Smith suitably replied. Dancing continued until 1 o'clock when all present joined hands and sang "Auld Lang Syne," thus bringing a pleasant evening to a close.
