OHOPE ROAD

Sir, —The Big Four hath spoken. As a deputation Ihey were practically self-elected for very few were at the meeting that appointed them. They were really representative of nobody but themselves. Mr Canning looms largely. He says: (1) That 95 per • ccnt desire the. road, (2) that the right-of-way is blocked at one end. What unpardonable "stretchers !" Meant to throw dust in the Council's eyes. When it cornes to roading it is the owner-ratepayers that count — for the cost will be on them. Recently over 80 per cent of the owner-ratepayers 1 to 58 sent into the Council a signed petition stat-v ing they did not want any change in the roading. Mr Canning disputes this petition but I notice lie does not present a counter petition. Then the right-of-way is not blocked (as he says) anywhere: even alongside Mr P % raser and Mr Runnerstrum more than half the right-of-way lies open to be used. My own opinion is that sometime in the future a new road will have to be made. The present roading is entirely satisfactory and a new road is not required yet. The sooner a new road is made the sooner we ratepayers will have to pay the extra for it. If I know that in two years time I will require a horse, I do not buy the animal now, I wait till I actually require it. Yours etc., ANOTHER 1 TO 58.
