MANPOWER COMMITTEE

REHEARINGS CONSIDERED

The Manpower Committee sat at Whakatane on Wednesday there being a number of rehearings for consideration. A number of the cases to be heard concerned men whose names had in the morning being announced in the Overseas ballot, therefore all such instances the hearing was adjourned sine die and the appellants informed that if they still wished to appeal against service they would be required to do so to the Armed Forces Appeal Board. If that Board granted their appeal then they Avould be obliged to again make application for exemption from territorial training.

Those whose cases were adjourned sine die were Alan Wm. Smith, William Bevan, F. L. Goodacre, P. Co.wan, C. D. Malaquin, A. W. Smith, Ronald Signal, Jack L. Harris, Douglas J. Wood, M. F. Lees and J. G. Dudscn.

The Manpower Committee comprises Messrs E. Edwards (chairman), G. Buchanan, E. J. Wilton and A. Ripley (secretary).

Two Sons Galled! A! farmer appealed for the exemption of two sons, J, W. Dudson and J. A. Dudson, who were engaged by him on different farms. Owe son assisted him and the other son who was married looked after the other farm. Both properties were short handed cwing to the labour problem. Decision was reserved. Dairy Employee # W. P. Windle, an employee of the Rangitaiki Dairy Co., was heard and on the evidence submitted the appeal was dismissed providing the reservist was not called for service before 1/4/41. Plea for Sharemilker Mr D. S. Radcliffe, farmer, of Edgeeumbe, appealed for a postponement of the calling of his sharemilker Walter A. V. Hyland. He stated that he had been unable to obtain other assistance and appealed for a further postponement of service. Adjourned to June 1. Illness of Partner Another sharemilker appeared on an adjourned case supported by his employer, Mr James Shaw, of Edgeeumbe. Mr Shaw stated that lie had been unable to secure labour and the sharemilker's partner had for the last six weeks been in hospital. It would be unlikely that he could resume work until some weeks had passed. Adjourned until June 1. Concern of Employer Appealing for Charles A. Spiers, Mr W. B. Topp,'stated that he could not replace his employee who was a very valuable man. He had endeavoured to do so. Ii! addition his son had been called in the Overseas Ballot and he would have to appeal for his release from service. The committee considered that the employer should make an extra effort to release his man for training and the appeal was discharged so long as the reservist was rot: called before April 1. If the sons appeal was dismissed then Spiers could be recalled from camp. Released by Company Douglas S. Caine appeared on his own and the Waimana Dairy Co***. behalf stating that the company was prepared to release him after April 1. The appeal was dismissed so long as reservist was not called before April 1. Father 111 Stating that his father was still ill and under medical care John T. Caine appealed against service. The case was adjourned sine die. Pearce, H. E. Revell and A. Moody. The case of M. G. O'Flaherty was adjourned sine die providing the appellant remains in his present position. The appeal of A..
