VERY DRY MONTH
FEBRUARY'S RAINFALL Rain fell on only four days of February to supply the very meagre total of .75 inches for the month,, being much less than the amount recorded in the >same month last year when the figure was 4.65. This brings the total rainfall for this year to 10.93 inche's as against 9.65 i fojr the first two months of 1940. driest January and February recorded was ir. 1929 when only 3.8 inches of rain fell while the highest registered for the period occurred in 1936 when the large total was \ 20.04 inches. Edgecumbe Figures. February was also remarkably drjr at Edgecumbe according to figures registered by the observer in that centre, Mr Andrew McLean. Only .9.6 inches appear on his records for the month, the heaviest fall befng! on the 14th when .32 was the catch. The total for the year at Eldgecumbe is 'greaJcr than at Whakatane being 12.25 inches, but not as great as last year when by this stage 15.96 inches had been recorded.
