FAREWELL COMMITTEE
GOOD WORK IN THE PAST DECISION TO CONTINUE To carry on with the work of instituting civic farewell functions and making presentations to soldiers when on iinal leave —such was the unanimous decision of the Whakatane and District Soldiers Farewell Committee at a recent meeting. The committee intends to function until such time as no further men are sent overseas. The chairman, Mr S. S. Sliapley, stressed the fact that while the necessary funds existed it was only right to rccognisc those who were going away. From the parents point of view this was also very necessary. In the past every effort had, been made to ensure that all soldiers leaving the district were recognised. Some had unfortunately been missed but he would welcome details of their whereabouts in order that the presentation could be forwarded
on. To date 220 pencils had been given cut and there were still 51 on hand. He anticipated that there might be trouble in procuring a further supply! but in any case they would be replaced by some other suitable gift.
In the past the funds of the* committee have been supplied by means of donations from the town. Any further donations in this respect will be welcomed, and may be loft with the chairman (Mr Shapley) or Messrs J. W. Wilson and W. Henderson or at the BEACON.
The treasurer, Mr L. B. Savage,• who is shortly leaving the district on temporary relieving work, riv signed at the last meeting, and l.as been replaced by Mr W. Henderson. Mr Savage was complimented by members on his sci'vices.
