ANCIENT GUM TREES
Sir,—As one who admires old trees I have taken notice of the tall gum trees in the Whalcatane Domain. I have been told that they were planted by the. Armed Constabulary encamped at Whaltalane in the troublous times of the severities when T'e Kooti and his warriors were to be feared. Can any of yoiir readers tell 'is how old these venerable trees are? Prqbably they are the oldest living things in Whakatane in point of view of continuous residence in the town. I hope they will not be cut down. The history of these tall trees would be interesting reading, if it could be pul into the coloumns of your paper. Yours etc., TREE LOVER.
