GARBAGE COLLECTION

Sir, —For years the people have been agitating for a rubbish and garbage collection and the net result has been a quarterly collection of tins etc. This is something but not enough the real danger spot still remains. A weekly collection of garbage is now demanded., A terrible howl has been raised against the shopkeepers in the Strand depositing their rubbish on the waterfront at the back of .the shops. This is quite right; but where* can these people* dump it? Answer.._ A few yards further up in rubbish; dump right in the middle of the town. Terrible!

Surely: the powers that be know that householders cannot continue to deposit their household refuse in open pits there to remain rotting till pit is full and covered over. Surely; they know that after this process has been carried on for years, every part of the back yard is used up and the soil becomes impregnated with disease. They surely know that such cpen pits are the life-line of rats. They have seen for themselves the whole ground honeycombed by these rodents. Even the most ignorant knows that these places are the biceding places for flies and mosquitoes. Those filthy disease carrying insects which are the menace to and the bane,of every health loving person. Those insects which literally invade the home, crawl about and deposit their filtli over all food, on the food in ""the children's hands and over the faces and bodies of sleeping children.' - "

still broadcasting filth and turning, septic any cuts or bruises they encounter. This is a semi-tropical climate and Whakatane is a natural breeding place for vermin if the conditions are suitable. This should not be—lt shall not be. Yours etc., VOX POPULI per A. C. King.
