WHAKATANE IN THE LEAD
TOWNSPEOPLE note with a certain degree of pardonable pride that the National Savings banner still flies at the Post Office mast. The flag as all know, indicates that on a population basis our town leads all others in the Thames postal district in the number of National Savings accounts opened in the local office. This is something which makes for pleasant reflection. Whakatane in its response to the war appeal has completed an' impressive performance which would stand comparison with any other community in the Dominion. The appeal for manpower resulted in just under 600 volunteers coming forward; the appeal for Red Cross andj Patriotic funds has always been liberally met; the appeal for the London .Relief and the Spitfire Funds brought a , splendid response. And now in the National Savings the district has oijce again set the example to others. These are facts of which we may well be croud.
