GREAT WHEAT CROPS
GISBORNE DISTRICT 50 BUSHELS TO THE ACRE Although the area in wheat 111 the Gisborne district is not large, a small increase has been noticed this season, and some of the* crops arc heavy. New varieties for the district were planted during the spring. In the past the Major variety was the one commonly grown, but Cross 7 and lainui were introduced season, and are reports! to be doing well. It is stated that a crop of Tainui wheat is probably one of the heaviest seen in the district for some time. A careiful inspection led to an estimate of 50 .bushels to the acre being made concerning it. The header, harvester, of which there are now about half a dozen in the district, is playing a prominent part in the harvesting of the wheat, as well as other grain and seed crops Threshing straight from the standing crop is one of the capabilities of this machine but it had not been tried in the Gisbcr.ne district until a few days ago, when the harvester took the heads straight from the standing crop and threshed it in the one operation with, it is stated, 100 per cent success.
