DROWNING FATALITIES

THE number of drowning fatalities in this district, are a strong argument for the Learn-to-Swim pool which has been planned at Ohope. Since September last year (when the first tragedy occurred) there have been no less than

eight lives lost in the Whakatane district,, and of this number five were children under fifteen years of age. The Ohope pool should in view of the above facts have many new sponsors, and it is pleasing to note that a further sum of £40 has been added to the original £200 collected by the: indefatiguable Mr F. Mahy who first thought of the scheme and who sponsored it through the difficult controversy which. greeted its announcement. The pool will be constructed this year and all going well should be officially opened for the swimming season next spring.
