COMET SEEN
CLEAR VIEW FROM WHAKA- , TANE IXMG, LUMINOUS TAIL The comet which has caused so much interest throughout the Dominion was seen clearly for the .first time in Wbakatane last Wednesday evening. About 8.30 p.m. observers noted the phenomenon and its slow progress across the sky -was watchedl by many from town :and district.
The comet appeared as a particularly large star, with a wide, luminous tail stretching behind it and fading into the deep blue of the sky. When first noticed it appeared almost directly overhead but as time went on it lowered into the west and at midnight was tipping the hilltops.
Seen through a telescope, it appeared as a pale ball of light yellow fire, with streaks of light trailing "behind. An observer on Hillcrest -considers that conditions were ideal for study, but he "pointed out that •special lenses were needed to follow this type of astrological phenomenon.
Though somewhat lower in the western hemisphere last evening the •comet was observed by many In .-spite of the cloudier conditions.
