LOCAL YOUTH FINED

An unusual case was heard at the ocal court on Monday when Doug-

las Henry, of Whakatane, was charged with maliciously disturbing a

local resident, and Messrs G. A. Brabant and J. (5. Mulholland, Js.P., who presided, in imposing a fine of 10s with costs lis, stated that such offences were difficult to eon-* trol and issued a warning that any similar cases would be dealt Avith more severely. The facts of the case were that Henry, who is aged 18 years, had at about 9..'30 p.m. on a recent evening knocked on the door of the premises of Mr C. J. Norries, No. 86, Commerce Street, with the object of causing annoyance. The defendant did not appear but in a statement admitted that he had done so previously with intent to annoy. Sergeant Farrell, stating that the case might appear a trivial one, pointed out to the bench that it was in reality a serious offence. Mr Norries was a man of nervous temperament and the repealed offences had caused him considerable annoyance. He Avished the bench to make it clear that such offences must cease. Speeding Charge Investigations in the preceding case led to a charge of speeding being preferred against Walter Green, who was stated to have accompanied Henry when he caused annoyance, but who took no part in the offence. The defendant,, who did not appear, ■was also charged AA 7 ith having ho current AA-arrant of fitness, for his motor cycle." In a statement Green admitted having with a pillion rider traA T elled down the main street at 35 m.p.h., but denied having attempted to frighten Mr Norries by swerving in his direction. On the charge of speeding a fine of £1 with costs 16s AA r as imposed, with 10s fine and costs 10s on the second charge.
