OHOPE MOTOR SPEEDS

LIMIT FOR POHUTUKAWA AVENUE NO FURTHER REDUCTION In reply to the Whakatane County Council's application to have the speed limit for Pohutukawa Avenue, Ohope, reduced to 20 m.p.li. the Commissioner of Transport has written stating that it was not considered desirable at this stage to further reduce the speed limit, pointing out that it was the Department's policy to apply only the 30 m.p.h. rule to all built up areas and lower speed restrictions were found only under very exceptional circumstances, such as some of the beaches and across weak bridges.

This information was received at yesterday's meeting of the County] Council and was not approved by sevei'al members.

Gr McGougan stated that the road was a most dangerous one as so many children were handy, and ;he felt it was necessary to have a restricted speed.

The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett,, pointed out that as the Department stated in Its letter the County Inspector could safeguard the pedes-* trians, by enforcing the law covering driving to the danger of Wie public. This law could be applied irrespective - of the speed a vehicle travelling.

The chairman remarked, that the Council had laid down a footpath with the object of improving the position, but as yet the people were not educated to make use of it. However, they may shortly make full use of it and in the meanti'me the traffic inspector could watch motor traffic behaviour.
