SPORTS MEETING RAISES £100
PATRIOTIC ALLOCATION MKT
Few pakehas will realise that the Maori Shorts gathering and Gala Day run at Ruatoki on Boxing Day realised the sum of £98 towards the district's allocation for the Patriotic funds. The levy (£150) has now been met in full and the whole ef-> fort can be taken as an example of Maori loyalty which should be an incentive to other pakehai districts. The sports' which were conducted With signal success by Maori officials with the assistance of a interested pakeha friends attracted a record attendance of natives from all parts of the Bay. Nor must the splendid work of the secretary, Mrs Dempster, be overlooked for were it not for her much of the organising would have not been possible. Interesting figures are gleaned from a statement of receipts and expenditure received by the secretary of the Wliakatane Patriotic Committee, Mr C. G. Lucas, details of which are:— Receipts: Gate £48 11s6d; Canteen (Soft drinks ami liangi) £43 17s 6d; Buried treasure £6 Is; Dance £17 18s 3d; Sale of goods £2 3s; Donations £16 0s 2d;. Entry fees £12 2s. penditurc: Advertising £2 19s .3d; Loud speaker £3 10s; Tarpaulins £3 7s 4d; Small gocds £18 19s 2d; Ice cream £11; Prize money £8 10s; Balance £98 9s Bd.
The committee responsible for the sports desires to tender their grateful thanks to the people of Taneatua, Opouriao and surrounding districts for their splendid support, which contributed very materially to the great success of the sports.
