SWORE AT CONSTABLE
MAORI SOLDIER CHARGED At the Opotiki Police Court on Wednesday before Messrs J. T. Merry and C. Pipe. J,P's„ a M<aori, Patari Komene, alias. Brownie Komene, aged 26, faced a charge of using obscene language in a public place, to wit, Church Street. Accused, who was passing through Opotiki from the Coast with other volunteers for the Maori Battalion, pleaded not guilty and elected, to be ■dealt with summarily. Sergeant J. Isbister concluded the case on behalf of the police. In evidence Constable Cooper said that he was crossing the street when lie heard his name called by accused behind him. When witness did not take any notice of accused, the latter addressed him in foul language. Witness then went over to accused who said that he had said the constable was a good fellow. Sergeant Isbister said that the police did not press for a heavy penalty, as th§y thought accused had learned a lesson. Accused was convicted and sentenced to one clay's imprisonment, ordered to be sent forward to the military authorities.
