AFTERMATH OF EARTHQUAKE
THIRTY-ONE AT TANEATUA
It is learnt on good authority that •damage to chimneys as a- result of the earth tre;nour last Thursday •afternoon was far mote widespread than at first anticipated. In this respect Taneatua tops the list with thirty-one, while Waimana comes a igood second with twenty. In Ruatoki there are many others and though complete figures are not available there are at least a dozen. Ohope also suffered in this respect four chimneys being laid low, while there are numerous reports from the -country districts of damage done. The slip on the Taneatua line is now well cleared while all road blockages are removed. in a pumice pit near state that the walls of the pit to lean momentarily over their truck and then straighten up again before a slip occurred. Throughout Friday minor tremors were felt, the most severe occurring •in the early hours of Saturday morning. Workers in the fields at Awakeri say that they had the singular experience of watching the earth move ment travel towards them like a, ."huge wave.
