THE NEW YEAR CARNIVAL

TO-MORROW evening a special meeting of the Whakatane New Year Carnival Committee will be: held for the purpose of dealing with accounts, discussing future plans and making suggested improvements. A letter in to-day's issue will give some food for thought, but with all honesty it can be said that for an event with barely a month's organising work behind it, the carnival was a distinct success and a definite tribute to those behind its promotion. It is also pleasing to note that it was a financial success as well as a public and a social one.

Award in the Carnival. The most original award in the New Year Carnival for decorated vehicles went to. Mrs C. G. Caisley and not to Mr Kinnerley of Auckland as reported in our last issue. M>rs Caisley's float represented the display of British manufactured articles in a Victorian setting.

Strong Surf. Since last Monday a strong surf has been running at Ohope Beach. Swimming is still the popular pastime but those who indulge in it would be advised not to go out too far unless they are expert swimmers.
