A GROWING TOTAL
THE departure of seventy-two further men from this dis~ \iirht for service overseas brings the known total to ; 685. This figure may be augmented to a large extent by men serving with the Air Force who have been omitted from the officiial list, and by others who have joined specialist units or who have enlisted from other centres. The re,-< fjborase from an area with a county population of 11,000? and a settled town district carrying approximately 3000 is something of an achievement of which Whakatane may well be prcud. In the first.,, seconds and third echelons this district was well represented and it would appear that in the future, later reinforcements will also be strongly supplied from the same area. At the sitting of the Manpower Committee yesterday over fifty applications were dealt wth and in not one single instance was. it not possible to come to a satisfactory arrangement relative to the d,uty of reservists in undertaking military training. It will be interesting to note the final list of men who served in the new war to save democracy, and from its indications now it will be no mean one.
