FEW SKILLED WORKERS
PROBLEM FOR INDUSTRY MANUFACTURERS' CONCERN One of the problems with which industry was faced was the supply of skilled workers, stated the annual report of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, presented at the annual conference at Haryner Springs, Particularly did this apply to highly-trained mechanics and machinists in such industries as engineering, footwear and clothing, which were actively engaged in the production of goods for defence purposes. Many such workers would be more useful from the point of view of the Empire's war effort if they were retained by. their trade for Avar production than if they were allowed to enter the aremd forces. However, there was a shortage of skilled labour and the Government was giving immediate attention to this with a view to training workers in those branches of industry where a shortage existed. A scheme was at present being introduced into the engineering industry in Wellington, and subsequently it would be extended to other parts of New Zealand.
