LAWYER'S FEE
ORIGIN OF THE 6/8 EXPLANATION OFFERED The origin o!' the lawyer's fee of (j, 8 has always been shrouded in mystery, hut Dr. O. (j. Mazengarb offered an explanation when address ing the Honorary Justices' Association at Wellington. Tlic probable origin of the fee, lie said, was that when the services ol lawyers were much in demand during the 1 udoi period, a goid coin known as the "angel"' was in circulation. Its value was G 8. Thai was a convenient and fair charge to make for attendance and advice. The value of the '-angel" iluctuated .somewhat until the reign ol Charles I. when it was worth 10/-i. and it was then withdrawn from circulation. But although the coin ceased to circulate, the lawyer's fee remained at until the economic conditions arising out of the Great War compelled a change. Even then the only alteration made in the charge was to the linal value of the, "angel." "\ou can therefore see how it is literally true to say that we have always been, and still are, on the side of the angels," Dr. Mazengarb concluded.
