POPULAR CHILDREN'S EVENT
NEW YEAR'S DAY PROGRAMME!
As in past year's Mr Ernest Runnerstrtim agafyi promoted! the usual children's sports meeting on New Year's Day, providing all the prizes and* the organisation himself , and this year extending the event to include a sand castle building competition for the most artistic children and also a bathing beauty parade to discover the identity of rt Mi,ks Ohope.">
The sports event attracted many hundreds to the Northern corner of the beach, where a full and. comprehensive programme was carried out and dozens of yoyng competitors were the proud recipients of prizes. Novelty, flat and open events figured in the proceedings the children being graded into age groups which made for fair competition. The* meeting was however, completely informal and one and all entered into the fun. of the? afternoon. Sand Gastle Building Fourteen architects in the making attempted the sand castle building competition, which produced some .surprisingly good results. An outstanding entry was a battlemented Norman Keep, with turrets,/ towers and bridge-way over a shalloAv moat The castles ranged from the simple conical construction to elaborate piles surrounded by traditional walls and approaches*
Enter "Miss Ohope" The Bathing Beauty Contest attracted sixteen contestants and was in the hands of the Hon,. Cyril Ward, Mr W. J. King of Hamilton and Mrs J. M. Clark. The event attracted considerable public interest and as Mr King announced .would be based on the nearest approach to the measurements of the famous Venus de Milo. The young ladies were from all parts of the province and in the parade one and all received a good hearing from' the crowd. After deportment tcstsj,, for carriage and natural grace four finalists faced the judges. Another careful test resulted in Miss Margaret Bullard of Whakatane, being formally declared the 'Miss Ohope 1;941' amid cheers from the assembled crowd. The measurements upon which the contestants was based, and, which are taken from the famous statue of Greecian perfection arc as follows; bust 35-inches, waist 27 inches, hips 32 inches, calf 12 inches, ankle 9 inches.
