BOOKMAKER CHARGED

OBSERVATION BY BENCH

"He says lhat the war has affected his business!," said Serrgeant M. Farrell when prosecuting Joseph Plamus in the Police Court on Saturday. Plamus was • charged that being the occupier ■of certain premises known as the Plamus Hairdressing Saloon, in . the Strand, he did use such premises as a common gaming house. Messrs J. G. Mulholland -and "L. H. Brown, J.P's, were -on the Bench. During the course of the hearing the Bench ob-> - served, "I suppose the war has af fected his business!, and it looks as though he is only in a small \ way." Defendant Pleadted Guilty Farrell a warrant was executed and Constable Prater on Saturday morning. When they entered they found defendant at the back of the shop making entries in a book eel). Defendant was quite frank and open. He did not appear to be operating in a very big way and he said that the Avar had affected his business. Answering the bench, Sergeant Farrell said he thought that defendant had two previous convictions for bookmalting, the last being afoout two> years ago. "Under the circumstances he will convicted and fined £25 and costs' said the bench.
