BOROUGH COMPANY PARADES
MORE OFFICERS APPOINTED
With a strength of two hundred men the Borough Company of the Home Guard paraded at the Winter Show Buildings last night. A spirit of keen enthusiasm marked the bearing of the parade, which included many with the R.S.A. badge on their lapels and more than a sprinkling with thinning or greying hair. There was a proportionate leavening of youth.
Following addresses by Major J. 'H. Herrold, ]>. S. 0., No. 2a Area Commander, and Mr L. B. Savage, district commander, the guardsmen took the oath of allegiance and were drafted into units, for which commanders have been nominated. In the course of his address Major Herrold said that he had received advice that that a seven-day course of instruction for unit commanders w r ould commence at the Narrow Neck camp on January 4. The No. 2a area would be represented by 30 officers, Whakatane supplying 7. Mr Savage announced that Mr C. R. Wilson, of Edgecumbe, had been appointed second-in-command of the battalion (the Whakatane County) and further appointments announced were those of Mr G. Otley, to be adjutant, and Mr C. H. Brebner, to be officer in command of the Whakatane Borough Company. The strength of the borough unit at present stands at 230, and 700 enrolments have been received from the county.
