OPOTIKI ABANDONS SCHEME
OPPOSITION TO RATE SECURITY At the November meeting of the Opotiki County Council notice of motion was given by Councillor Maxwell that at the December meeting he would move the rescinsion of the council's resolution favouring the Rural Housing Scheme. Putting the motion at the monthly meeting, Cv Maxwell said that he was opposed to the principal of a special rate being struck as security over the whole county for the benefit of those who wished to avail themselves of the provisions of the Act, and he feared that in times of depression the council might be called upon to meet its liabilities. Cr Hedley thought the council should take a long view and could see no real reasons for apprehension provided reasonable precautions were taken.
