Rate Penalty. Borough ratepayers are reminded that to-day concludes the period of grace allowed for the payment of their contributions to the municipal exchequer. Rates unpaid after to-day Avill be increased by the addition of the penalty.

As about fifty per cent of the men drawn had been examined previously, the parade on Saturday will number approximately 45 men. Ohope Again. "We have at our backdoor one of the finest beaches in the Southern Hemisphere," said Cr Canning at the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening. Regarding the Domain Board, Cr Canning said that its financial prospects puzzled him and he thought that finance, . to some extent, should be provided by the County* Council, which derived income from rates collected at Ohope. Appreciation. Mrs Caverhill, president of the Matata Branch of the Women's Institute, has received Christmas and New Year greetings from the "'Offi* cers, n.c.o.'s and men of the Well-ington-West Coast Company, 19th Battalion, N.Z.E.F., in the Middle East.
