ASSISTING PATRIOTIC FUNDS

GALA DAY AT BEACH

O'ne of the brightest events at Ohope for some time occurred* on . Saturday last when the ladies of the local Red Cross branch promoted l and conducted a very successful "bazaar in the Captain's Cabin Hall for the purpose of raising the district's quota for patriotic funds. The event Avas an eye-opener to those who attended, the display of. goods being a distinct credit to the beach community. The sewing revealed work of a particularly: high standard while the produce and vegetable stall was yet a fuvth'er tribute to the favoured Ohope conditions. The bazaar was opened by the Mayoress of Whakatane, Mrs B. S., Barry, who congra-tulated the ladies responsible and wished the event the greatest success. She was presented with a beautiful bouquet by the president, Mrs P. Bullen. No sooner had this pleasing little ceremony taken place than Mrs Whyte presented Mrs Bullen with a bouquet "in. recognition- of the wonderful work she had performed iji connection with the necessary arrangements. ' Fine Result. Throughoutthe afternoon the hall was thronged. Business was " brisk and the competitions were never lacking warm support. , It can" safely be said that Ohope de 4 finitely set 'itself to ensure that its : first bazaar was going to be an unqualified success. As a result of .the day's business the sum of £32 was - raised and this will be handed to the patriotic committee.

Stall holders were: Cake, Mesdames Timms and Rayner; Produce, Mes-. dames Roper and Hogg; Flowers and Sweets,, Mesdames Holliwell and Ranby; Plain and Fancy: Mesdames Whyte, Robinson and Jones. Competitions resulted: Xmas cake (made and donated by Mrs Timms), JSill. Rayner; Chocolate Guessing*. Mrs Timms; Cushion, Miss El Connoly; Bread board, knife box and salt box,, Mrs -Estelle Hooper. r - Afternoon tea was in the care of Miss T. White and Mrs Kilyington;
