GONE AFIELD
MAORIS CAMP ON WHALE ISLAND OPENING OF THE MUTTON-BIRD SEASON One hundred and eighty Maoris from all parts of tlie Whakatane County, congregated in Whakatane on Friday for transport to Whale Island, where they will spend their time until next Monday in the pursuit and preserving of the muttonbirds. 1 The number engaged in this seasonal industry this year constitutes a-record and the task of transporting them and their equipment was no small problem. Seven trips to the island were made on Friday by the Harbour Board's launch, and a number of private launches were en-: gaged. The last of the party was taken across on Saturday morning.
On Friday night the foreshore presented a picturesque sight with many camp-fires flickering against the silhouetted background of the island.
