YOUNG BANDSMEN
GOOD PROGRESS MADE TWENTY-EIGHT ENROLLED i The recent appeal for boys who were willing to train as bandsmen of the future in order to fill the gaps made by those who have gone on service, has had a very promising' response. At a recent practice there were no less than twenty-eight young boys who expressed a willingness to take up the role of bands men of the future. The boys are being trained by Mr Mayo, who is so impressed with their enthusiasm, that lie lias on his own iniative decided to institute a second practice night in the week. In response to this the boys last week gave him three cheers and undertook to attend in force. Mr A. J. Canning (vice-president) in addressing the boys, congratulated them on their spirit, and offered a special medal for the learner who made most progress by February next. The difficulty at the present time is to find sufficient instruments to go round, and Te Puke and Opotiki have both been contacted in an at-« tempt to borrow or purchase any spare instruments in this connection. It is hoped that tlvs ■ public will also support the movement and in the event, of any person being able to help by gift or loan, that they will show their interest by doing so. Committee Meeting. At a committee meeting recently, it was decided to write wishing all ex-members on active service the best of ruck and a safe return to New Zealand. - The vacancies on the committee' caused by the temporary absence of Messrs E. Chamberlain, E. Thomp son and T. Jones, were filled by the appointment of Messrs J. Pyne, F. Skelton and R. Stewart. Mr W. Jarrett also undertook to act as secretary pro tem.
