BOWLING
HINTS AND PARS - I ' } There are three types of "shot" in 1 the bowls game. "The Draw," "The 1 Running Shot" and "The Drive." The draw is the foundation of the game, and is a shot in which the bowl is delivered Avith only sufficient momentum to reach the "jack" This is the shot ■which the beginner should practise to the exclusion of all else. He should practise at every opportunity until lie becomes proficient, and then keep on practising. A player cannot become an expert bowler until he has the Draw shot at his command. The Running Shot is played Avith more pace than the dVaw, depending on Avhat it is intended to do. IT,'? idea may be to trail or move the Jack a foot, a yard, or more to bowls of that players' side, or may be to remove an opposition bowl and take its place; or to remove one bowl from the heal altogether. This shot is the hardest of all shots to play, and- requires a high degree ol skill and experience. A beginner should not attempt this shot until he has learned to draw. The Drive is a bowl delivered at high speed, with the idea of killing the head-—that is, putting the Jack out of bounds; or taking out an opponents bowl when the running shot is not applicable. The Drive should be delivered very cleanly without bumping, and with plenty of folloAV through; little or no green should be alloAvecl as the speed of the boAvl overcome? the tendency of the bowl to draw. The Drive is not easy, and requires a lot of practise, but also should oe used Avith discretion. •' fast into the head may have the op- ' posite effect to that intended. It may skittle the players own bowls 1 and lea\'e the opponents untouched, also if no harm is done to the : head the bowl is lest. In fact it is I a good policy never to drive Avhen > a draAV Or running shot will do.
