THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
MOKORUA GOLF CLUB SPARKS BEATS POWDRELL The Open Championship contest conducted by tlie Mokorua Golf resulted in a win for Sparks 'Tc Puke), who defeated Powdrcll [Whakatanc), 3 and 2. The following is a stroke-by-;trokc description of the match by Vlr G. H. Brenner, the umpire:-— I.'Winning the toss Sparks drove i fair drive to the centre of the lair>vay. Powdrcll also had a fair drive md placcd his-second 15 fe.ct from the pin. Sparks played a good s,ecjnd to within 8 feet of the pin. Both 'ailed to sink their putts and the iolc was halved in fours. 2. Both had fair drives with Sparks having the advantage. Powdrcll played his sccond strong to •each the back'of the green. Sparks played a good second to finish 3ft. from the pin. Powdrcll was wean ivith his approach putt" and failed to sink his fourth. Sparks failed to sink his third but won the hole in tour to make him one up. 3. Sparks drove a good ball but Powdrcll topped his. powdrcll played his sccond short and Sparks did likewise. Sparks played his third through the back of the green and Powdrell played a good approach to Finish two feet from the pin. Sparks just failed to hole his fourth and Powdrel'l took the hole in four to make tiic game all square. 4. PoAvdrell drove a good ball to the left ol' the green to Find a clump of. rat tai 1. Sparks was "10 yards short of the green but played his second to the back of the green. ■Powdrcll failed to get a good shot from the rat tail and played his third shot short also. Sparks played his putt to wotliin 2ft of the pin and won the hole in 4 to make him 1 up. 5. There was a hard cross wind at this hole and Sparks played a No. 2 iron to the centre of the fairway. Powdrcll had a good drive and a good sccond to find the hillside. Sparks, played a good second but put his third through the back of the green. Powdrcll found the nqar edge of the green and placed his fourth dead. Sparks was short witli his fourth and failed to sink bis fifth and Powdrell took the hole in 5 to (5 to make the match all square 6. Powdrell had a good drive and Sparks a lair one. Sparks played hiss econd too strong to iinisli 2C yards through the green. Powdrell played his second short of the green and Sparks played his third within 7ft of the pin. Powdrell played his third dead Sparks putt went into the hole and out again and Powdrcll took the hole in 1 to make him 1 up 7. Both had good drives and both placcd their seconds on the green to run off and down the steep sides Powdrell played his third on tlu green but short. Powdrell played his third Loft short and his fourth within 4ft >f the hole. Sparks iad a fair second and placed his hird 12ft from the pin. Powdrell pproached past the pin with lii's ourth and lipped the hole with his ext. Sparks also lipped the hole ,-ith hip putt and won in 5 to nakc im 1 up. 15. Both had good drives. Powrell had a fair wood for his second rid Sparks played a long pulled ,-ood. Powdrell played his third hrough and to the right of the reen. Sparks played a good third Oft from the pin. Powdrell was 6ft liort with his approach and Sparks nitt ran off finishing two feet to he right of the hole. Powdrell ipped the hole with his putt and is return putt went in the hole and lit again.
