FAREWELL TODAY
MEN: ON LEAVE CEREMONY AT COUNCIL CHAMBERS | Owing to the limited number of volunteers now on leave in 'Whakatane, it Avas decided at a meeting" of the Whakatane town and district Soldiers' Farewell Committee, last evening to hold the usual ceremony in the BorQUgh Council Chambers at 4p.m. to-day. An invitation will be extended to the general public to attend and as nearly as possible the programme observed at the usual farewell gatherings in the Winter Show. Hall will be observed. It Avas ascertained that the men on leave numbered 6, and that a nursing sister from this district Avas also about to go abroad. A counter suggestion that the presentations ■should be made this evening in conjunction Avith the Patriotic effort promoted by the Caledonian Society \A r as rejected- in favour of the afternoon's function which it was considered AA 7 ould be more fitting in vieAV of the limited number concerned. The question of nurses leaving the Public Hospital for service Avith the forces Avas also discussed it being decided to get in touch with tAvo young ladies Avho had recently left for that purpose and despatch them the usual gift together Avith a letter conveying the townspeople.? good Avishes. The secretary Avas also instructed to Avrite the Hospital Board requesting that the names of any future nurses Avho left for service with the armed forces be submitted to the committee.
