BEAUTIFYING WHAKATANE

The gift of a number of native trees from an ex-member of the Whakatane Beautifying" Society, who was without the knowledge of its demise, should act as a spur to those who still retain a sense of pride in the appearance of the town. Owing to the rapidity of its growth there are few towns of its size in. the Dominion which lend themselves so much to the work of an active Beautifying organisation as Whakatane. It is not the residential areas so much as corners of the business section itself which could be greatly improved by the efforts of an organisation interested in the town's lay-out a,nd appearance. The Borough Council with its limited means would probably welcome this co-operation from the citizens who though occupied with various war efforts. should not overlook the fact that they owe .a definite duty to the town in which they have their homes and make their livelihood.
