TREES FOR PLANTING
EX-RESIDENT'S INTEREST BEAUTIFYING WHAKATANE Letters have been received recently from Mr P. Keegan, formerly a prominent resident of Whakatane, now living in Dunedin. Mr Keegan, who was a member of the naw defunct Whakatane Beautifying Society, has indicated his interest in that organisation by forwarding for planting a number of young T'otara trees and Pepperwoods from South Westland. The trees have been handed to the Borough Council, this body undertaking the necessary steps to have them planted. At the same time it is rather distressing to note that Mr Keegan, still so interested in Whalcatane's progress, is in ignorance as to the position regarding the fate of the erstwhile Beautifying Society. From this gesture Whakatane residents may take the lesson from one who was once actively engaged in a work of advancement and it would become citizens to take a lead in this matter and set to Avorlt to remedy much-needed defects in the town's appearance and lay-out. The Avork of the old society stands as a monument to its energy and foresight but Avith the borough groAving at such an unprecedented rate there are neAv areas Avhich need urgent attention and the time Avould appear opportune for the resuscitation of the oroginal society, which, Ave understand, already has certain funds posted to its credit.
