LAUNCHES FORCED TO SHELTER TANEATUA SPORTS POSTPONED Last week prophets gloomily pre- • dieted a Avei day on Labour Day, basing the prophesy on past experience. The weather on Monday did not let them down and alter a morning of blustery wind and occasional showers the threat was realised and heavy rain fell in the afternoon, becoming heavier in the evening, when it was accompanied by •strong electrical disturbances. Apart i'rom hardy golfers and bowlers, the majority of Wliakatan"ians spent the day indoors, firesides • and books being the order. The sports meeting scheduled to be held at Taneatua was postponed and this unfortunate necessity was the more because the proceeds were to go to the patriotic funds. Many people were disappointed but a good attendance patronised the dance held in the evening and the sum of £16 was raised. Launches Shelter. Several launches were forced to run for shelter, returning to port yesterday after anchoring for sonic time in Otawairere Bay. Messrs Dent Brothers and party spent a very sorry Labour Day and yesterday at White Island. Mr C. E. Wright and party, leaving on Saturday for the East Cape, were compelled to make for Whale Island on Monday afternoon and it appeared that engine trouble made things rmore difficult, the launch anchoring "twice. Mr Roy Stewart and party "made Whale Island on Sunday, returning to Whalcatane yesterday •after anchoring in Otawairere Bay, where the Harbour Board launch •also-sought shelter.
