BOWLING SEASON OPEN

LARGE ATTENDANCE AT GREENS VISITORS ATTEND Bowlers from Taneatua and Auckland attended the official opening of the Whakatane Club on Saturday last. Owing to the fact that both Te Puke and Opotiki held their respective ceremonies on the same day there were no visitors from those clubs. • With weather conditions ideal and greens in perfect order the afternoon was a thoroughly enjoyable one, the games all friendly contests for which the skips were drawn The president, Mr S. McLeod, in declaring the season open said it was most gratifying to see such a large attendance. In these days of strain he. felt it Avas most necessary to maintain friendly sport, and bowl ing provided perhaps the finest relaxation of all. He was glad to be able to say that it had more folowers than any other sport. Mr McLeod mentioned that an old supporter Mr R. F. Smith, had donated silver stars for competition between Ist, 2nd and 3rd year players. This gesture Avas much appreciated and he AA r as sure there Avould be some keen games. Referring to the loss of Messrs Butt and Guthrie Avho are the district he said that he Avas sure they Avould lie an asset to Avliich ever clubs they went. After reminding boAvlers of the usual full rink tourney to be conj ducted on Labour Day he then called on Mrs McLeod to play the first jack up the green and Mr C. G. Caisley, the oldest club member present to'deliver the first boAvl. Details of the afternoon's play were as under:—• Gee, Rixon, BigeloAA', Healy (s) 22 beat Ruddick, Berg, Smith, HayAvard (s) 16; J.
