FARM CONTRACTS
RE-INTRODUCTION OF 4B SCHEME DIVERSION OF LABOUR The re-introduction of the 4B Scheme oIV subsidised contracts for farm clearance was announced by Mr L. H, Armstrong, Placement Officer for the Bay of Plenty, following advice from Wellington. Mr Armstrong stated that the cancellation of the scheme some weeks ago Avas considered to halve had the desired effect of diverting labour to farms, and it was no>v considered that workers who had previously taken contracts such as fencing, scrub clearing and ragwort eradication under the scheme, and who had not taken up farm work, were not suitable as farm labourers, "'We will keep a close eye on those taking contracts and ensure that farm workers are not leaving their positions for contract work," stated Mr Armstrong, in answer to a question. While there were many applications under the scheme from Tauranga and Whakalane, there were only two in the Rotorua district. The Placement Officer added that as far as could be judged from the number of applications received, the farm labour situation was less acute than at this time last year.
