EASTERN BAY OF PLENTY FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S INSTITUTES PRESENTATION TO EXPRESIDENT " The Bi-annual Council meeting of the E.8.P.F.W.1.'s was held at Matata, Mrs Wool/ield presiding. <Jvcr delegates, members and friends were welcomed, including Mrs McNaughlon and Mrs Christian, and other Tauranga visitors, who had been invited to attend the meeting, also the President of the Awakeri W.D. An apology for ah- 1 sence Avas received from Mrs V. Wilson, V.O. The usual routine business was dealt with, and Mrs Withy V.O. gave her report. A letter from Head quarters was read urging members to release eggs for export by selling locally as many as they could spare, also to raise more pullets for next year. Institutes were also warned against making levies on members for various funds. . *. * The President, in her address, asked members to deal with each other in these hard times with the utmost sympathy, tact and understanding. Women would be called upon more and more to do extra work. While it was gratifying to know that women had done much for patriotic work, t'hey must not lose sight of the fact that they were also "doing their bit" just by looking after their own homes and families. Mrs Woolfield asked the "Perifriends" Secretary, Mrs McNaugliton, to convey to English Penfriends sympathy with them in their troublous times. Request to Minister. Manawahe W.I. was congratulated on winning the Potato Shield, having grown 252 I ,£lbs of potatoes amongst 13 members for Federation funds. Institutes were reminded to plant their potatoes for tiie competition this season. The only remit, "That the Hon. Minister for Health be asked if a district nurse could be made available to the combined white settlers of Murupara and Galatea, with a strong recommendation that the ser- < vices be available also to other remote districts," was carried unanimously. Mrs McNaughton asked Institutes to try and arrange for a visit from Miss Cocks-Johnston, agricultural tutor, and explained the details of the course of lectures. The visit would be towards the end of Nov- ; ember or early December and. the object of the course, was to create a greater interest in gardening, especially vegetables and orchard work. The course includes practin cal and theoretical work in flower, fruit and vegetable cultivation, preserving and drying, garden lay-out,
tree-pruning, treatment. oC soils, control of pests. The lectures are open to everyone, including men. and members of Young Farmers* Clubs. It is hoped that Institutes Avill join with clubs and other circles to make the lectures available to as many people as in the shortest! ime. The charge for the full course of six lectures will be 5s per person or ls'caeli single elcture. Mrs< Withy Honoured After the luncheon adjournment occasion was taken to do honour to Mrs Withy, after 10 years service, during which time she never missed a Federation meeting. Mrs Withy was president of the original Federation, before T'auranga divided from the rest of the Bay of Plenty six years ago and was first President of the new Eastern Bay of; PlentyFederation, and is also Voluntary Organiser. Much of the success of the Institutes in the Federation has been due to Mrs Withy's untiring enthusiasm and energy. Mrs Woolfield called upon Mrs McNaughton, as a member of the Dominion Council, to present Mrs Withy with the gold service badge. A posy was presented to Mrs Withy from the E.B.P.F. and one from Tauranga, with the addition of a beautiful' presentation box of flowers. In returning thanks for the gifts, Mrs Withy spoke of the pleasure i> had always given her to work for the Institutes and of how much there was in the movement for every woman. Posies were presented to Mrs Woolfield (one from each Federation), to Mrs Christian and to Mrs MciSaughtbn (who also received a presentation box of flowers), and shoulder sprays to Mrs Woolfield and Mrs Wardlaw. After the delegates had given their half yearly reports (including

The monthly meeting of the Te Feko* branch of the W.D.F.U. and the Lady Gal way Guild was held re-; cently, with Mrs Jamieson presiding over a very good attendance of members. . Haultain, who visited the neeting to give members further nformation on the course , of liorti- : culture >which it is hoped to comiicnce* in the district, spoke on the ; co-operation of the Government ivith the W.D.F.U. in the scheme 3f Adult Education, which is giving the country women invaluable help. She then touched on some of the subjects which can be taken in this course, namely the preservation of fruit and vegetables, flower gard- > cning, the pruning of fruit trees, s ?tc.-, the lessons being one shilling ; jach, five shillings for six, or tea : shillings for twelve. Results of the afternoon's com- ; petitions were given as follows: — Best Bloom: Mrs Jamieson 1, Miss Jamieson 2. Best Plate of Pikelets: Mrs Burr 1, Mrs Pepperal 2. v ' / Mrs E'ivers then took the. chair for the Lady Gahvay Guild meeting. Clothing made during the month, and used-clothing was hand- ; ed in, and more supplies were cut out nmL distributed amongst the ladies for making tipu this month. A dainty afternoon tea served, by Mrs Ewen, Mrs Sparks and Miss S.f Tebbutt brought the afternoon to a 3l ose.
