STAFF SHORTAGE PROBLEM
It is now the turn of the town to complain of shortage of workers. Since the calling up of the new Territorial force it has become very real and pressing problem to replace the men who are needed for training. The point most employers make it is that though the absence of their men is only regarded, as temporary it is nevertheless for too lony a period to be treated, in that light, and new hands must be engaged in order to carry on efficiently. In. many instances temporary hands are engaged and in others the duties have been moderated in order that female employees or totally inexperienced workers may fulfill the tasks. The strain however is very general and few firms are not effected.
Pipe Band Preparing. Members of the Whakatane Pipe Band went through an intensive practice last Monday preparatory to their taking part in the rally at Rotorua on Saturday next. The Band will give a marching display and will play a prominent part in the Ingleside which is to be held in the Ritz Hall.
Sccut Presentations. Last Monday evening those members of the AVhakatane Boy Scout Troop (Boyd's Own) who had served their first, second and third years received their respective stars. The president of Ihe Citizens Committee making the presentations congratulated the boys and wished them continued success.
