LURINA AT PAEROA PROGENY OF LUCULLUS No horse ever at the stud in New Zealand had a more romantic history than Lucullus, who was bred in Germany, raced in "amateur races" in India, was sent to England/stood for one season at the famous Cobliam Stud, getting only two marcs, was relegated to West Wal'es, sold at New Market during the Great War for 25gns, to Mr J. O. Hayward (one of the worlds greatest authorities on thoroughbred horses), and brought to New Zealand, where he finished up his stud career at a fee of oOgns. Lucullus was by the Derby winner Ard Patrick, out of the German Oaks winner Lucca, reputed to be the best mare of her day in Germany. He was a great success at the stud here, heading the winning sires' list in 1927-28 and easily headed the brood marc sires in the Dominion for the season just closed.. One of his few entire progeny is Lurina, who is standing as a subsidised, stallion in the Paeroa district. a Lurina, who is owned by Mr V. Young, is by Lucullus from Catharina lay Son It from Lady Glare by Saracen from Lady Sarah by Aerolite from Elsa, a Tratfucer mare, who Avon the Auckland Racing Club's Easter Handicap away back in 1878 for Mr. O. G. McGee and the late Mr Joe Ghadwick. Elsa was a granddaughter of Bella, a pure Arab mare imported from New South Wales by Major Durie. The best winners produced by the family were Crinoline, ETsa, Catastrophe and Princess of T'hule. Lurina is a half-brother to Thurnline, dam of the good hurdler Luminary. With only very few representatives racing, Lurina has produced two good winners in Ivinkle and Selwyn. Winning-Form. Beaulivre's victory in the Chelmsford Stakes on Saturday made his third successive win in Australia this season. The Mitchelson Cup. Beau Repaire made such a fine showing in the Avondale Cup that his chance in the Mitchelson Cup is already being highly assessed. Lou Rosa's Mile Effort. ' The performance of Lou Rosa in the Avondale Guineas was full of merit. When the straight was reached Beau Leon, winner of the Champion Plate on the day, had such a commanding lead that a very easy victory appeared certain, but Lou Rosa galloping brilliantly from a long way back, ran him to a length. The gallop will do him good and before long he should be in real racing condition. As a Hurdler. The Paeroa owned Day Wind, made his debut as a hurdler at Avondale on Monday in the Grej Lynn Hurdles Handicap. From the despatch he went to the front and made the pace a merry one, but at the top turn hit the timber, lost his rider, and took no further part the contest. With more experience however, lie should be a success over the battens. A Question of Time. At the Avondale meeting Monte Cristo Avon the Henderson Handi* a hack event of six furlongs, carrying 8.12 in 1.13 3-ssccs. Later in the afternoon the Flying Handicap, the open sprint race, over the same distance, went to Marshall Hall with 7.9 in exactly the same time. Whether at these Avcights the hack avouM defeat the open class horse cannot be definitely known, but in the meantime Monte Cristo's performance undoubtedly stands our more prominently.
