HERD TESTING
AUGUST AVERAGES ASSOCIATION'S "REPORT The Bay of Plenty-and East.Coast" Herd Improvement Association's averages for the. period'ending .September Ist, 15/iO, show inat the Patutalii Group had the highest average. The group tested 257 cows,, with an average of, 371bs butterfat. Thornton Group with 1070 cows averaged 35'lbs, while Edgecumbe with 1175 cows averaged 34lbs. Opotiki East and Opotiki West both averaged 291bs, this figure being only lib above thevlowest figure of 281bs« The association altogether tested 14300 cows, which averaged 311bs. In the herds of from 1 to 20 cows, a Gisbornc herd of 5 cows was top with an average of 501bs butterfat;- being followed by a Te Karaka herd of 5 cows with an average 43 lbs, and a Manutuke herd of 14 cows aVerage 461 lis. An • Opotiki West -herd of 14 cows averaged 431bs and an Opotiki East herd of 17 cows averaged 33lbs. -A Whakatane herd of 12 cows and a Galatea herd of 11 cows, were lowest with 261bs. The highest from 21 to 50 cows was in the Te Puke group, 36 cows averaging ifilbs butterfat. A Thornton herd of 13 cows was next wijth an average of 41 lbs, followed i>y herds in Whakatane (39 cows), and Gisborne (21 cows) with averages of 431bs. An Opotiki West herd of 33 cows averaged 361bs and an Opotiki East herd of 31 cows averaged 331bs« A Waiapu herd of 23 cows was lowest with an average o£ 31 lbs. Some splendid averages were put up in the class 51 to 100 cows. Art Qtakiri herd of 77 cows, gave the fine figure of 4Glbs butterfat, closely followed by an Edgecumbe herd of 83 cows with an average of 451bs. A Te Puke herd of 76 cows was'third ' with a 421b average. An Opotiki _ East herd of 56 cows averaged 351bs. The Opotiki West top herd was one of 62 cows with a 32I'b average. The lowest average was a Tolaga Bay herd of 57 cows with a 271b average. Only two herds were tested with numbers exceeding 101 and over, these being a Thornton herd of" 135 cows, 431bs butterfat average, and an Edgecumbe herd of 112 cows, average 381 bs. The highest test was given by the Te Karaka herd of 5 cows which had a test of 6.2 per cent butterfat.. The lowest test was from , the Thornton herd of 135 cows, this; being This herd however was a big milk producer, as cm be seen from thebutterfat average of 431bs.
