IN THOSE DAYS

WHAT IT MEANT TO BE apprenticed A FEW RESTRICTIONS The faded ink can still be read plainly on the apprenticeship indenture taken out by Mr Charles George Jarrett in 18(59, and which document is in the possession of his son, Mr W. Jarrett, of Whakatane. The'restrictions imposed on apprentices were many and it would seem that the only things pcrmissable were eating and sleeping. Inter alia,, it states: "During which term (four years) the said Apprentice his Master shall serve; his secrets keep; his law ful commands evcryAvhere gladly do; lie shall do no damage to his said Master nor see to be done ol others but to his Power shall tell or forthwith give warning to his said Master of the same; he shall not waste the Goods of his said Master nor lend them unlawfully to any; he shall not contract Matrimony within the said Term; shall not play at Cards or Dice Tables or any other unlawful Games whereby his said Master may have any loss with his own goods or others during the said Term without Licence of his said Master; he shall neither buy nor sell; he shall not haunt Taverns or Playhouses nor absent himself from his-said Master's service day or night unlawiuliy'Letc. The semi-colons are not in the document and have been added to make the reading easier.
