Concrete Water Main. A concrete-l'ined water main has been laid in Ramson's block and water services have been provided to all sections in that locality. The storm water sewer with the necessary sumps, gratings, headwall, etc., has been completed. Conviction Recorded. Hori Tamati Cairns, a young Maori appeared before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M,„ on Tuesday, charged with failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation for theft. Sergeant M. Farrell said that accused had been in custody for some time and the imprisonment Avas some pun ishment. Cairns had also made restitution of the money stolen, Cairns was convicted and discharged.
Improvements. Grading and widening operations are being carried out in Russell and Haig Streets preparatory to re-met-alling. The existing metal surfaces are not in the centre of the roadway and this fault will be rectified with the re-surfacing.
New King Street Sub-station. Goocl progress has been made with the erection of the new structure for the 250 KVA King Street sub-sta-tion. It was stated by the Borough Electrical Engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght, that' this work would be completed as soon as the necessary switch gear and transformar arrived. Full Dress Rehearsal. At a meeting of the Thames Emergency Committee arrangements were completed for a "try-out" next Monday. The large firebell at the Shortland end of the town willj be rung at 6.4") p.m., and lights extinguished. Respective committees —medical ambulance, police, hospital, transport, supply and communication — will take up their respective positions,, The public is to be asked to co-operate in the demonstration of the precautions. Slip Causes Difficulty. Provided that further heavy rain does not complicate matters, the Public Works Department expects that the slip between Ruatahuna and the Hoparahine saddle on the Waikaremoana Road will be cleared in a few days. Two factors have contributed to the difficulties involved in clearing this slip which has inconvenienced traffic for the past month. The rubble hill-side has continued to slip, and this rubble has partially dammed a small stream which was forded at this point. Failure to Give Way. Michael Acton Sullivan was represented by Mr G. Olley when he, Avas charged before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., with failing to give'way to the right, The plea was one of guilty. Sergeant M. Farrell outlined the facts relating to the charge, giving details of an accident which had occurred near Te Teko and following counsel's statement, defendant was fined £1 and costs.
