NOT PRACTICABLE
Word from the Minister of Finance,, Hon. Walter Nash, (as published in today's issue) indicates in no uncertain terms that the suggestion of the suppliers of the Rangitaiki DairyCompany, to purchase a fighter 'plane for the Royal Air Force, is not practicable. Even had the desire to assist in this respect been possible, the Minister also points out that before such a donation could be made it would be necessary to amend the regulations governing the Company's Act. It is also pointed out that the only sum . authorised was the £100,000 (New Zealand currency) which the Government had decided to make available by virtue of various subscription lists which could be handled by the Provincial Patriotic Committees. Thus it will be seen that the second alternative of town and. district combining for the purchase of a fighter 'plane is also not permissable but that all donations must be pooled in the common fund going forward from the Dominion as a whole. Donations therefore which have been received by this office will when the fund is closed be handed to the Mayor for forwarding on to the Provincial Committee. In the meantime it is. not the intention of the Dairy Company directorate to call a further meeting of suppliers unless by special requisition from a substantial number.
