RAGING NOTES

Valuable Thoroughbreds. Mr H. Riddle, of Otago,, avlio recently disposed of Nigger Boy at a big price, last week refused an offered of £1000 for that gelding's full sister, Desert Maid. Now in Favour. Since the Pakuranga meeting the Cambridge trained pair, Royevrus and Our J;ean, have come into favour for their Avondalc engagements. Both will be allotted their full share of weight. A Gratifying Result. The Patriotic one diay meeting held by the Waikato Racing Club, resulted in a profit of £1820, the whole of which went to the Patriotic Fund. Just at present the agitation for the cessation of racing in New Zealand is lulling somewhat. Racing into Form. The Matamata trained Expellant is being raced into form, and may not be long in getting on to the winning list. At the Wellington and Pakuranga meetings ho was in the placed division, finishing very solidly on each occasion. Kentucky Nearly Ready. The Auckland owned, but Trentham trained, Kentucky, is to have his first start as a Ihreo year old at the Wanganui meeting this month,, which is to be held at Awapuni on account of the club's course now being used as a military camp. Not a Winning Sprinter. Mazir made his first public appearance this season in the open sprint at Ellerslie. He was top weight with 9.12, and the track was mududy indeed. He put up a last preliminary, but did not show any brilliancy in leaving the barrier, and ran along with the field without having the semblance of a winning chance. He will, however, be, well served by the gallop. Goldfield's Cup Winner. Mintlaw, by Vaals —Administration, winner of the 1940 Goldfields Cup at Thames, is now being trained at Te Awamutu by J. H. Eva. The horse, in respect to appearance last week at Ellerslie,, was a credit to his trainer. Ridden by R. Home, he carried out the early running of the Jcllicoe Handicap in very capable style, but will require further racing before being seen at his best A Valuable Addition. The Masterton trainer, B. Burgess, who invariably brings a small team along for northern meetings each summer, anct was represented in February last by Lady Montana and Augment, has just taken up a Ihoioughbred of class, by name Happy Ending, he is by Beau Pere, his j dam being Termination by KilI broney. He will probably be included in the travelling team next summer. Steering not Perfect. In the running of the Admiralty Handicap at the Pakuranga me#-, ipg, the first favourite, Our Jean, a pronounced public fancy, was in the centre of the field until half way down the straight, but was not perceptibly gaining on the leaders. Less than one hundred yards from the Avinning post, which is on the right hand side of the track, the Vaals mare put in a sensational run made up many lengths, finished up with a great burst of speed past the judge's'box, which is one the left hand side. But for running over far too much ground, she would have registered an easy victory. *

Another Gift Horse. Instances have often been notec* of owners presenting racehorses to friends, but as a general rule this has applied to candidates that have finished their racing careers, buf which have been quite sound enough to be used as high grade hacks. There have been cases, however, where exceptions have been noted, and the latest under this leading is the gift of the General Latour gelding, Besiege, by Mr Martin Timr., of Te Awamutu,} to Mr Ernie Montgomery of Auckland. The horse ; who won the Members' Handicap al Matamata recently will be trained by M. B. Abbott, whose successes with Llangollen, Scotland, Merry Vails, and Haile Boj r will be well remembered. • In tlie near future Abbott will be transferring his team from Opotiki to Rotorua.
