* —> V - t MR CHARLES MERRIMAN The death has occurredy at re-, sidence of his daughter* Mrs R„ Peebles, Taneatua, of Mr Charles Merriman, aged 92. Well known throughout the Bay of Plenty, the late Mr Merriman was born in Norton, Gloucestershire, England, and migrated to New Zealand in 1877, per sailing vessel 'Otaki.' For two and a half years after his arrival,, Mr Merriman was manager on Slipper Island and experienced many hardships, at one time having to subsist on pork and cabbages for six "weeks, rough seas making provisioning impossible. , From Slipper Island Mr Merriman transferred to Tauranga, where he stayed for three; and a. half yearsv From Tauranga he went; to Opotikl, where he farmed Until going to Taneatua about twenty years ago to reside with his eldest daughter. Mr Merriman is survived by five sons, Messrs Charles, Frederick and Ernest, of Tauranga, John, Te Puke, and William, Frankton; and three daughters, Mrs R. Peebles, Taneatua, Mrs M. Bennett, Opotiki, and Mrs G. Walker,"'Frankton. There are 48 grandchildren, 30 great-grand children, and 7 great-great-grand-children. Throughout his life Mr Merriman was a hard worker and made a sue* cess of farming. He was highly respected! throughout the Bay of Plenty and'was interested- in anything making for the progress of the district. > - ' ,

MRS E. B. BRUNTON

The death has occurred, at the. age of 65, of Mrs Ethel Ballinger Brunton. . ' The late Mrs Brunton came to Whakatarie twenty-five years ago with her husband, the late Herbert Brunton, who was engaged in the building trade. Mr Brunton died ih 1920 and since Brunton conducted the Post at Kopeopeo until'.two years ago. Mrs Brunton was keenly interested in horticulture,, exhibiting and judging at flower, shows throughout the Bay of Plenty. A member of the Church of. England choir for 17 years, and an enthusiastic worker for the Wo- : men's Institute, Mrs Brunton had! been" in indifferent health for 'a number of years. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Daphne Brun ton, of Whakatane.
