OLD LOVE LETTERS TO CARTRIDGE WADS
"Old love letters can be turned into cartridge wads, bones into exploI sives, tin-cans into tanks and gard'en tools into guns," declared Mr Herbert Morrison, British Minister for Supply, discussing the new nationwide salvage campaign. "I ask house holders to overhaul their possessions, turn out attics, clean up lumber rooms, clear out woodsheds, delve into garages and collect old gadgets 7 ornaments, bits and pieces which arc of little value to the individual but of enormous value in the mass to the State*" he said.. "Thus the housewife will help to put the lid on Hitler. "I have instructed the local authorities serving populations over 10,000 that the collection of the three main items of salvage—paper, bones and scrap metal—is now compulsory .
