NINE INCHES OF RAIN LAST MONTH YEARLY RAINFALL UP Whakatane experienced the second lengthy period of wet weather this month when rain fell almost continuously from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. For the greater part of the time it resolved itself into only a light fall but at times it rvvas driven rather heavily by a northerly wind of gale force. 2.8 inclidjj, fell in the 48 hours, bringing the total for the month to 9.02 inches, which was almost five inches above that for August last year, but approximately the same margin below the record for August, which was registered during 1938. The total this year amounts to 30.94 inches, compared with 24.62 for the same period last year. Recordings were made on the gauge of Mr H. Muscutt.
