SPITFIRE FOR VICTORY
Sir,—l should like to 'compliment the Rangitaiki farmers on their decision to supply a "Spitfire'* fighter for the Home Country. Brave farmers! Though it has been stated, money • will not hasten production of planes, ■ as factories are working'to the limit, there must, come a time in the not too dislant future when produo tion (which is increasing enormously in the countries'that supply Britain) overtakes finance and Britain will need all there is from those on whom she is depending. ~ I have seen a statement saying "Give until it hurts," I ask* how many in New Zealand have been hurt by giving? Very few. The ones hurt by giving are the ones who are offering their lives and their people. Let us take a lead from the farmers see how much we can hurt ourselves by contributing towards a "Spitfire." Every fighter Britain gets lessens damage to men; women and children killed and military and naval objectives, homes of the people; andi shortens the w T ar. This cannot be repeated too many times, lest we forget, Churchill's saying: "Never was so mucli owed by so many to so few." Ah yes, too few* To non-farmers:., go for it, boots and all, and T for one will* contribute five pounds. Bravo farmers, sound the clarion call, Spitfire for victory, guns for butter, Each for. one, and one for all s The Boche shall dread the ■ Spitfire s stutter. 1 Never so much, was owed by many, To so few among the brave, Who roam the skjies In search of Jerry, That the homeland they may save.. They fight better facing fearful oddS Knowing well the costs to pay,
They give until it hurts, Ye Gods t And we, what do we give, I say! But New Zealand doubt not the vital fact Your frontier is the Motherland, And will you, through neglect to act, Risk slavery., to a murderous band.) Better a rotten Borough or so And a road or two the less So we keep our country from the foe The country which God doth bless.. Shall New Zealand's name be writ . in water Because we just deserve our fate Shall we like cattle meet with slaughter And the victims of the Nazi hate, v Come then, from North,, South, .East and West, Give till it hurts "to the brave,'* What profit is left, if lost is the best Give now, and God's own country' save.
