Now that the above subject has been ventilated at the Borough Council meeting it is to be hoped that the Works Committee, to which it has been delegated will tackle the matter seriously and thus remove for good a state of affairs which is a slur on the progress of'the town and an affront to the citizens who endeavour to keep their homes decent and their properties presentable. Unnoticed in. the earlier days when the'inhabitants of Whakatane numbered but a few hundreds, the refuse problem has now become a regular menace and in the heat of summer may easily lead to serious trouble. For years the nuisance has persisted, shocking visitors and newcomers till they too have become: tolerant by familiarity. Now however is the opportunity to insist on a mend of the old easy-going style and by urging upoaour city fathers the glaring need for redress, dnitiatem this borough a service which ninety nine per cent of the boroughs throughout New Zealand have enjoyed for years-
