EQUIPPING MILITIA
RIFLES, MACHINE GUNS AND AMMUNITION In a telegram to Army Headquarters, Wellington, the Whakatane County Clerk, Mr C. G. Lucas informed tlic authorities that the Council was enrolling local home defence militia with a strength of eight hundred men. A request was made for a list of officers available locally for Appointment, and after stating that all services were voluntary, a request was made for advice respecting the immediate supply ,of "'-vo hundred rifles and two machineguns, with the necessary ammunition.
